Whale watching in Mauritius and Madagascar: sperm whales and the humpback season

The one Mauritian listing with whale watching in it is a $126.11 speedboat from Black River, and the humpback season runs July to November. This page separates the whale watching from the dolphin swimming — legally and ethically they are not the same thing.

The Indian Ocean west of Mauritius does something unusual: it gets deep immediately. The reef ends, the seabed drops away, and a social group of sperm whales lives in that water within a few kilometers of the beach at Tamarin. The Mauritius Tourism Promotion Authority says plainly that sperm whales can be seen year-round along the west coast, and that humpbacks migrate through from July to November.

So there are two trips here, and it matters which one you book. One is a whale trip, at dawn, on a small boat, looking for animals in deep water. The other is a dolphin trip into the resting bays, which is what most of the market actually sells. They cost about the same and they are not remotely the same thing.

Good

The sperm whales are the reason to come. They are the deepest-diving large animal in these waters, they surface in loose groups to breathe for ten or fifteen minutes between dives, and — unlike almost everywhere else on this site — they are here in February as well as in September.

Humpbacks are the seasonal layer on top. Off Mauritius they are passing through on migration; off Île Sainte-Marie in Madagascar, 1,200 km (about 750 miles) to the west, they are stopping to breed and calve, which produces the surface behavior people travel for. The Malagasy season is shorter and runs earlier, roughly June to September.

Dolphins are the third element, and the one that dominates the market. Spinner and bottlenose dolphins live along the same west coast of Mauritius year-round, in numbers, close to shore and in shallow water. That reliability is why most of what is sold here is a dolphin product with a whale label attached to it — a distinction this page comes back to, because it changes what you should book and what you should decline.

Two different calendars overlap here. Mauritius has a resident sperm whale population and a passing humpback migration from July; Madagascar's Sainte-Marie is a breeding ground with a shorter, much denser humpback season in the southern winter.

If you want one trip that could produce both, go in August, September or October. Sperm whales are there all year and the humpback migration overlaps those months on both islands. If humpbacks are the whole point, go to Madagascar in July or August instead.

The weather argument runs the other way from the whales. The southern winter brings the south-east trades and a cooler, windier Mauritius — pleasant on land, choppier at sea. Since every boat has to be back by noon, the early departure usually catches the best of the day anyway.

Which boat

Speedboat

8–12 passengers · 2–3 h

The west-coast standard out of Black River and Tamarin. Fast, open and close to the water. By law it must carry an approved propeller guard.

$126.11 with whale watching

Catamaran

20–40 passengers · 5–6 h

A half-day with lunch and a lagoon stop attached. More comfortable, far less focused: the cetacean part is a fraction of the day.

from $87

Kayak

Small groups · 2.5 h

Sold at Tamarin as a dolphin trip. Quiet and low-impact by nature, but you go where the paddling takes you, not where the animals are.

from $63.05

Madagascar small boat

Île Sainte-Marie · 2–3 h

Booked locally, not through international platforms. Cétamada trains the guides and operators who run these trips.

The speedboats out of Black River and Tamarin are the serious option: eight to twelve people, an open hull, a skipper who has had to pass a Tourism Authority test on how to handle a boat near cetaceans, and a propeller guard the law requires. Two to three hours, all of it looking.

The catamarans are a different product. Five or six hours, lunch, a lagoon stop, snorkelling, and a cetacean segment that occupies a modest part of the morning. They are comfortable and good value as a day out. Just do not confuse them with whale watching.

Kayaks sit awkwardly between the two. A guided paddle from Tamarin is quiet, has no engine noise and no wash, and is genuinely the lowest-impact way to be near dolphins — but a kayak cannot reach the deep water where the sperm whales are, and it cannot follow anything. Book it as a morning on the water, not as a whale trip.

In Madagascar the boat is whatever the operator has: an open fibreglass launch or a motorised pirogue, with a guide and a driver. That sounds basic and it is, but Sainte-Marie's whales come close to the island and the trips are short.

Almost everything in Mauritius leaves from the west coast between Le Morne and Tamarin, because that is where the deep water is. If you are staying on the east or north coasts, factor in an hour and a half of driving before a dawn departure — most operators sell a hotel pickup for exactly this reason.

Île Sainte-Marie is a different logistical proposition: a flight from Antananarivo to a narrow island off Madagascar's east coast, where the whale season is the tourist season and the boats are small and locally run.

Réunion is the third option and the one people forget. Saint-Gilles-les-Bains on the west coast sells short cetacean cruises through the same southern-winter window, at the lowest prices in the region, and the island is a short hop from Mauritius. If you are combining islands, it is a cheap way to get a second attempt at the same humpbacks.

Prices are checked regularly. Madagascar's whale trips are not sold on international platforms; budget for them in cash on Sainte-Marie and book through your accommodation.

This is the one region on this site where the booking platform is a poor guide to what is available. GetYourGuide's Mauritius listings are dominated by dolphin-swim and catamaran-cruise products; there is no dedicated humpback or sperm whale trip in the feed, and there is nothing at all for Madagascar. What that means practically: use the platform for the catamaran and the transfers, and arrange a dedicated whale boat locally.

The rules on the water

Official information

Mauritius: the Dolphin and Whale Watching Regulations

Prohibited zone
No boat may enter within 50 m of the nearest dolphin or 100 m of the nearest whale.
Regulated zone
50–150 m for dolphins and 100–200 m for whales, to be entered, crossed and left at no-wake speed with no sudden change of course.
Approach
From the side, on a parallel course. Never head-on, never from behind, never circling, never through a pod.
Swimming with whales
Prohibited outright. The Tourism Authority has reminded skippers that allowing passengers to swim, dive or snorkel with whales is an offense.
Swimming with dolphins
Legal only under a specific licence, with a life-saver, a first aid and oxygen kit, the Alpha flag flown, and no more than three swimmers in the water at once including the life-saver.
Hours
The activity may only be sold between 06:00 and noon — which is why every boat here leaves at dawn.
Other craft
Kite surfing, jet skiing, paragliding, diving and windsurfing are banned within 500 m of a dolphin or whale.

Source: Mauritius Tourism Authority — Dolphin and Whale Watching Regulations. From the official source; double-check before you go.

Mauritius has one of the most detailed cetacean-watching laws anywhere, and it is worth reading before you book because it tells you what a legitimate operator looks like. The boat carries an Authority label and a propeller guard. The skipper holds a certificate issued only after a test on cetacean behavior and boat handling. A dolphin-swim boat flies the Alpha flag, carries a life-saver with a flotation device, and puts no more than three people in the water at once.

And the whole activity ends at noon. If someone offers you an afternoon dolphin trip, they are offering you something they are not licensed to sell.

Madagascar's framework is younger and less prescriptive but real: the country is one of relatively few with a law governing marine megafauna watching, implemented through observation charters for marine mammals, whale sharks and turtles, and Cétamada — a Malagasy association based on Sainte-Marie — has trained the guides and operators against those charters since 2013.

The dolphin-swim problem

The largest, best-reviewed and most heavily marketed cetacean products in Mauritius are dolphin swims off Black River and Tamarin. They are legal. They are also the reason this page keeps making the distinction.

Spinner dolphins feed offshore at night and come into the shallow west-coast bays during the day to rest. The boats go to the same bays at the same time, because that is where the dolphins reliably are. The regulations limit the damage — 50 meters, no-wake speed, no circling, three swimmers at a time, and everything finished by midday — but the underlying trade is still human recreation during the animals' rest period.

You do not have to take a position on the ethics to make a practical decision. Watching from the boat is cheaper, shorter, legal in more places and gets you the same animals. If the trip you are offered is built around getting into the water, ask for the watching version instead.

What "guaranteed" actually means

Sighting guarantee

Nobody in the Indian Ocean sells you a sighting guarantee, and you should be suspicious of anyone who implies one. What you can check instead is the licence, the flag and the hour.

Mauritius
Operators need a tourist enterprise licence, a certified skipper who has passed a Tourism Authority test, an Authority label on the boat and an approved propeller guard. There is no sighting clause in the regulations at all.
The season, officially
The Mauritius Tourism Promotion Authority says sperm whales can be seen year-round and humpbacks migrate through from July to November. That is the closest thing to a published expectation.
Madagascar
Cétamada has trained guides and operators since 2013 under an interministerial decree, with separate observation charters for marine mammals, whale sharks and turtles.
What you actually buy
A partner listing's own cancellation window. Read it before booking; it is the only refund mechanism in play.

No operator anywhere can promise a sighting, and a dawn start is a legal requirement here rather than an upsell.

There is no re-ride clause here, no published success rate and no refund mechanism in the regulations. That is not a failing of the operators; it simply reflects a market that is younger and smaller than Iceland's or South Africa's. The practical substitute is the cancellation window on whatever listing you buy, and the licensing checks the Tourism Authority already does on your behalf.

It also means the usual advice applies with more force than elsewhere. Go out on the first suitable morning of your holiday, not the last. If the sea is wrong on day one you will want day two, and by day six you have run out of mornings.

Practical notes before you book

Set an alarm you will actually hear. Departures here are between 06:00 and 07:00 and the boats do not wait; the legal window closes at noon whatever time you arrive.

Take seasickness seriously on the speedboats. They are small, open and out past the reef within fifteen minutes, and there is nowhere to lie down.

Check what "whale watching" means on the listing you are buying. On several Mauritian products the phrase covers a short offshore leg tacked onto a dolphin trip. The honest ones say so.

And in Madagascar, plan around the island rather than the boat. Sainte-Marie's season is the busiest few weeks of its year, flights fill, and the difference between a good trip and a bad one is usually whether your accommodation put you with a trained operator.

Questions people ask

When is whale season in Mauritius?

The Mauritius Tourism Promotion Authority says the ocean around the island is whale-spotting territory especially along the west coast, that sperm whales can be seen year-round, and that humpback whales migrate through from July to November. July to October is the practical window if you want both.

Can I swim with whales in Mauritius?

No. The Dolphin and Whale Watching Regulations prohibit swimming, diving or snorkelling with a whale, and the Tourism Authority has issued a reminder to pleasure craft licensees and skippers that allowing it is an offense. Swimming with dolphins is a separate, licensed activity.

Should I swim with the dolphins?

We would not. It is legal with the right licence and conditions, but the spinner dolphins off Tamarin and Black River are resting in those bays during the day after feeding offshore at night, and the boats arrive in numbers at dawn. Watching from the boat costs less, takes less time and disturbs less.

Why does every boat leave at six in the morning?

Because the law says so. The regulations allow the activity to be sold only between 06:00 and noon. That is a welfare measure, not a scheduling quirk — it gives the animals the rest of the day undisturbed.

How close can the boat get?

Fifty meters from a dolphin and 100 meters from a whale is the prohibited zone. Between 50 and 150 meters for dolphins, and 100 and 200 meters for whales, the boat must move at no-wake speed, approach from the side on a parallel course, and make no sudden change of speed or direction.

Is Madagascar better than Mauritius for humpbacks?

For humpbacks alone, yes. Île Sainte-Marie sits on a breeding and calving ground, and the season there is shorter and much denser than the migration that passes Mauritius. The trade-off is access: two flights, a more basic tourism infrastructure and no international booking platform.

Can I book Madagascar trips in advance online?

Not through the platform we compare. There are no GetYourGuide products for Île Sainte-Marie whale watching, so plan to book through your hotel or a Cétamada-trained operator once you are on the island.

What about Réunion?

Réunion runs a small cetacean-watching fleet from Saint-Gilles-les-Bains on the west coast, with the same southern-winter humpback season. It is cheaper than Mauritius and easier to reach from mainland France than from anywhere else.
