Whale watching in Africa is concentrated, seasonal and — in one bay — better from the shore than from a boat. The continent's industry sits almost entirely in South Africa, where southern right whales calve in shallow Western Cape bays between June and November, with a second, smaller set of destinations strung along the Indian Ocean: Mozambique, Mauritius, Madagascar and Réunion, all working the July-to-October humpback migration.

South Africa

The Western Cape is the center of gravity. South African Tourism puts the southern rights off Hermanus in Walker Bay from June to November — "August and September are the peak", easiest in August, September and October, and by December almost all gone — and says the town's whale crier works from 10am to 4pm between June and December. A cliff path runs above the water, and at the peak animals lie inside the surf line for hours. Nothing else on this site offers that combination for free.

The boats matter too, because the law draws a hard line. Under the Threatened or Protected Marine Species Regulations, harassing a whale includes approaching it with a vessel or aircraft closer than 300 m, so everyone stays outside that ring unless a permit says otherwise. Boat-based whale and dolphin watching permits are issued by the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment for terms of up to ten years, renewed annually against permit conditions and a code of conduct that sets minimum distances and maximum speeds — and it is an offense for a non-permitted operator to advertise whale watching at all. Ask for the permit; a legitimate operator answers immediately.

South Africa also holds three of the twelve fully designated Whale Heritage Areas in the world — Algoa Bay, The Bluff and Plettenberg Bay — a World Cetacean Alliance designation that recognizes places where whale watching is run responsibly and the animals are part of local life.

Beyond Hermanus: Gansbaai and Kleinbaai (shared with the shark cage industry), Plettenberg Bay and Knysna on the Garden Route, and False Bay and the Atlantic seaboard at Cape Town, where resident Bryde's whales are present year-round and humpbacks pass in spring. Full detail, ports and operator reviews are on South Africa.

Mozambique

Ponta do Ouro, just over the South African border, and the Bazaruto Archipelago both sit on the humpback migration between July and October, and Ponta is known for in-water encounters with dolphins. We have no page for Mozambique because there is no scheduled, bookable inventory of the kind this site compares — trips are arranged through dive lodges on the spot. If you are traveling that coast, treat it as an add-on to a diving trip rather than a whale-watching destination in itself.

Mauritius and Réunion

Mauritius has two draws. Sperm whales are present off the west coast near Tamarin through much of the year — one of very few places in the world where the species is resident close inshore — and humpbacks pass between July and October. Boats leave from Black River and Tamarin, most of them small, most of them combining whales with dolphins.

That combination is the problem. The island's dolphin-swim industry puts a lot of hulls around resting spinner and bottlenose pods at dawn, and it is the activity most often criticized by researchers working there. If you book anything in Black River, book the operator that caps numbers and keeps its distance, and read the listing carefully: a trip titled "swim with dolphins and whale watching" is mostly the former. Réunion runs a smaller, similar season out of Saint-Gilles-les-Bains.

Madagascar

Île Sainte-Marie, off the east coast, is the humpback destination: the channel between the island and the mainland fills with breeding and calving humpbacks from July to September, and the small operators there run short trips out of Ambodifotatra. It is a remote, seasonal, weather-dependent trip — and, in a good week, the closest thing in the western Indian Ocean to Hervey Bay. Mauritius and Madagascar share a page: Mauritius and Madagascar.

How to plan an African whale trip

Three decisions cover most of it.

Pick the coast before the country. The Western Cape is a southern right destination: cold water, calving bays, shore watching, a two-hour boat. The Indian Ocean side — Mozambique, Mauritius, Madagascar, Réunion — is a humpback destination with warm water, smaller boats and a shorter window. They are not substitutes, and the species you want should decide the flight.

Build around the peak, not the shoulder. South Africa's season is long enough to be forgiving, but the difference between July and September in Walker Bay is the difference between whales somewhere in the bay and whales below the path. In the Indian Ocean the window is tighter still: August is the safest single month for humpbacks at Sainte-Marie and Tamarin.

Plan for weather, not for whales. Winter on the Cape coast brings north-westerly fronts that cancel boats; the whales stay, the sailings do not. Give yourself two or three days in the area rather than a single booked morning, and keep the cliff path as the fallback. Operators will usually rebook a weather cancellation, but they cannot create a calm sea on the one day you are there.

A practical note on combining: Hermanus, Gansbaai and Cape Town are within two hours of each other by road, and the shark cage boats out of Kleinbaai run in the same season. Plettenberg Bay and Knysna sit four to five hours further east on the Garden Route, which makes them a stop on a longer drive rather than a day trip.

What it costs

South African pricing is the clearest on the continent: about $96 for two hours at Hermanus, $76 at Plettenberg Bay, $143 at Gansbaai, and $74 to $244 for a full day out of Cape Town depending on whether the boat trip is included. Madagascar is sold locally. Mauritius sits between $63 and $126 for a half-day speedboat, but read those titles closely: every Mauritian listing our partner carries is built around dolphins, and the $126 card above is a dolphin swim with whale watching attached rather than the other way round. Prices are checked regularly against the live feed.

Walker Bay, August or September

The calving peak of a recovered population in a bay with a footpath along it — the highest ratio of whale to effort anywhere on this site.

Skip it if A dolphin-swim package sold as whale watching in Mauritius; it is a different, far more crowded activity.

Check Hermanus dates from $94.95

Africa is a one-season continent for whales, and the season is short. If you can choose your dates, take the Western Cape in late August: southern rights at their peak, humpbacks starting to pass, Bryde's whales resident, and a bay you can watch from a bench. If your travel is fixed to the Indian Ocean, aim at July to September and go to Sainte-Marie rather than to a dolphin-swim booking. The species behind these trips are covered on right whales and humpback whales; for the next continent along, see Asia.

Questions people ask

When is whale season in Africa?

June to November in South Africa, peaking in August and September for southern rights. The Indian Ocean humpback season — Mozambique, Mauritius, Madagascar, Réunion — runs roughly July to October, and into November off Mauritius.

Where is the best whale watching in Africa?

Walker Bay at Hermanus, for one specific reason: southern right whales calve inside the bay, and a cliff path runs along it, so the animals are watchable from land for months at a time. Boat trips from Hermanus, Gansbaai and Plettenberg Bay add the closer view.

How close may a boat approach a whale in South Africa?

Nobody may go within 300 m of a whale except under a permit that specifically allows it. Boat-based whale watching permits are issued by the national department for terms of up to ten years and renewed annually against a code of conduct.

Can you see whales from Cape Town itself?

Yes — False Bay and the Atlantic seaboard get southern rights, humpbacks and resident Bryde's whales in season, and day trips run from the city to Hermanus and Gansbaai. Cape Town is the practical base for a first trip.

Is swimming with dolphins in Mauritius a good idea?

It is the most criticized marine activity on the island: crowded boats, early starts and repeated approaches to resting pods. If you book it, choose an operator that limits numbers and keeps its distance, and understand that it is not whale watching.

Are there whales in East and West Africa?

Humpbacks breed off Gabon and Angola and pass Kenya and Tanzania between July and September, but none of it is served by the scheduled, bookable tours this site compares. We cover what you can actually reserve.
