Freebird Catamaran is the mainstream Tenerife whale-watching experience, done at scale and done competently. Three big catamarans out of Puerto Colón in Costa Adeje, a bus that collects you from your hotel, a sandwich or a plate of chicken and rice, a bar, sunbeds and — most days — pilot whales within half an hour of leaving the harbor. The cheapest version is €30 for two hours. Prices are checked regularly.
It is sold as a resort excursion rather than a wildlife expedition, and it is fair to judge it on those terms. If you want a twelve-seat inflatable and a marine biologist, this is the wrong boat and Flipper Uno up the coast is not it either. If you want a comfortable half-day with a real chance of whales, it works.
What the company is
The trading entity is Funcat Primero S.L. Its about page claims 25 years in the business and more than 40 employees, but publishes no founding year, so we are leaving that row as "not published" rather than guessing one.
Its one substantive credential is membership of the whale-watching quality charter run by Tourism of Tenerife, which sets conduct standards for operators in these waters. The wider area carries weight too: the Tenerife–La Gomera Marine Area is one of only twelve fully designated Whale Heritage Areas worldwide, on the World Cetacean Alliance's own list.
The boats
Freebird One is the flagship at 28 meters, built in France, and the company describes it as the largest catamaran in the Canaries for sea excursions. It has an indoor area with a bar, a toilet, an upper deck for a higher viewpoint, and a VIP sunbed zone of 18 doubles.
The F13 and the F24 One4You are both 22-meter Fountaine Pajot Tahiti 75s, each with two toilets, a bar and 12 double sunbeds; the F24 was built in 2008. Sunbeds are not included in the fare — they run €10, €15 or €25 per bed for two people depending on trip length, which is worth knowing before you board expecting one.

Trips, prices and where you meet
Four options, all from Puerto Colón, docks 10 and 15. Two hours on the Costa Adeje water is €30. Three hours, with a swim stop near Diego Hernández beach, is €47. The 4.5-hour run west to the cliffs at Los Gigantes and Masca is €62 with lunch, or €69 with pick-up from Puerto de la Cruz in the north.
Transfers from Los Gigantes, Costa Adeje, Los Cristianos, Playa de las Américas and Golf del Sur are included, with times confirmed after booking. Freebird tells you to be at the pick-up point 15 minutes early, which is sensible advice on a coast where the bus is working a long circuit.
Sighting guarantee
Freebird publishes no sighting guarantee — what it does publish is a clean 24-hour cancellation policy.
- Sightings
- No re-ride, refund or percentage is offered anywhere on its site. The resident pilot whales off south-west Tenerife are the reason it does not need one
- Cancellation
- 'Free cancellation up to 24 hours before the activity starts. If you cancel under this time or do not show up, you will not be refunded' (freebirdone.com)
- Weather
- If the trip is canceled for weather, the company offers a different date or a full refund
- Minimum numbers
- The trip also needs a minimum number of travelers; if it does not fill, you are offered another date or a full refund
No operator can promise a wild animal. Tenerife's odds are unusually good, but they are odds.
The absence of a sighting guarantee is not the red flag it would be in Iceland or Norway. Spain's environment ministry records both bottlenose dolphins and short-finned pilot whales as maintaining resident populations year-round in the Teno-Rasca marine strip, the protected water these boats work. When the animals live there, operators do not need to sell you insurance against missing them.
The rules, and the yellow flag
This is the part of a Tenerife booking worth learning, because the local rule is stricter than the one most European operators quote. Canary Islands Decreto 178/2000 prohibits approaching closer than 60 meters to a cetacean — not 50, which is the figure repeated on a lot of booking pages. It also caps speed at 4 knots within 500 meters, bars a boat from closing to 100 meters when two are already there, bans swimming or diving within 500 meters, and limits any vessel to 30 minutes within 100 meters.
Article 15 of the same decree requires an authorized tourist vessel to fly the yellow "Barco Azul" flag. Look for it at the dock. It is the quickest legitimacy check available to a visitor, and it costs nothing.

The platform does not name Freebird in any title, and the two Costa Adeje listings that look closest to its own trips are not its boats: the archived listing pages name the activity provider as White Tenerife on the three-hour eco-cruise and Eden Catamaran on the two-hour catamaran tour. The €47 the first of those converts to happens to match Freebird's own three-hour fare, which is a coincidence of a crowded market rather than a clue. Book Freebird at freebirdone.com, where the 24-hour free cancellation is the operator's own.
How it compares
Against the small-boat operators in the Canary Islands, Freebird trades intimacy for comfort, shade and a bus. Against Flipper Uno at Los Gigantes it is a larger, more modern vessel from a busier harbor, without the wooden-boat character and without Flipper's paella. Against VMT Madeira, which runs a near-identical catamaran format, Tenerife is cheaper and has the stricter approach law.

The 3-hour Costa Adeje trip
Two hours is enough to reach the pilot whales and turn around, but the three-hour version buys the margin that matters if the first group has moved, and it includes the swim stop. Transfers from the southern resorts are in the price.
Skip it if The 4.5-hour Masca run if seasickness is a risk — it is a longer exposure along an open coast for the same animals plus scenery.
Check datesQuestions people ask
How much does a Freebird trip cost?
Its own site lists €30 for the two-hour Costa Adeje excursion, €47 for the three-hour, €62 for the 4.5-hour Masca and Los Gigantes trip with lunch, and €69 for the same trip with pick-up from the north. Children 4 to 11 are about half price and infants free. Prices are checked regularly.
Which catamaran will I be on?
One of three. Freebird One is 28 meters with a bar, an indoor area, toilets, an upper deck and 18 double sunbeds; the F13 and F24 One4You are 22-meter Fountaine Pajot Tahiti 75s with two toilets each and 12 double sunbeds. The company does not publish passenger capacities.
Is hotel pick-up included?
Yes, from the main hotels in Los Gigantes, Costa Adeje, Los Cristianos, Playa de las Américas and Golf del Sur, and on some tours from the north. Pick-up times vary and are confirmed after booking; Freebird advises waiting from 15 minutes before the quoted time.
What will I see?
Short-finned pilot whales and bottlenose dolphins are the two species that make Tenerife reliable. Spain's environment ministry records both as maintaining resident populations year-round in the Teno-Rasca protected marine strip off south-west Tenerife, where these boats operate.
How close can the boat get?
Canary law sets 60 meters as the closest approach to a cetacean, not 50. Decreto 178/2000 also caps speed at 4 knots within 500 meters, bars a third boat from coming within 100 meters, forbids swimming or diving within 500 meters, and limits any boat to 30 minutes within 100 meters.
How do I know a boat is licensed?
Article 15 of the same decree requires authorized whale-watching vessels to fly the yellow 'Barco Azul' flag. If the boat at the dock is not flying one, it is not licensed for the activity.
Does Freebird guarantee sightings?
No, and it does not claim to. What it publishes instead is free cancellation up to 24 hours before departure and a full refund or a new date if weather or low numbers cancel the sailing.
