GetYourGuide is the platform this site compares prices from, so start with the disclosure: it is our only booking partner, our links carry a partner tag, and a booking made through one earns us a commission at no extra cost to you. That is the deal, and it is the reason this page has to be more careful than most, not less.
The thing to understand before you book a whale tour on it is that you are not buying from GetYourGuide. Its own terms say so in plain words: the contract "is concluded exclusively and directly between you and the Supplier", and "we act as a commercial agent for the Suppliers", taking a commission from the operator. The platform collects your money on the operator's behalf, issues the voucher on the operator's behalf, and handles the messages. The boat, the captain and the safety standards are the operator's.
What the company actually is
GetYourGuide Deutschland GmbH is registered at Sonnenburger Strasse 73, 10437 Berlin, at the Charlottenburg local court under HRB 132059 B, with the VAT number DE276456081. Management is listed as Tao Tao, Johannes Reck and Nils Chrestin. Its about page tells the founding story: four classmates — Johannes, Tao, Martin and Tobias — started the company in 2009 after Johannes landed a day early in Beijing with nothing to do until Tao arrived and showed him the city. The company describes itself as made in Zurich and Berlin.
Its published scale figures are its own: "over 150,000 experiences in 12,000 cities" and "over 200 million tickets" sold. Payments from US cards are processed by a subsidiary, GetYourGuide Operations Inc. of 80 Pine Street, New York.

- A supplier may cancel for weather or other force majeure without notice, and "the Booking Price paid for the canceled Activity will be refunded"

How a booking actually works
You add an activity to a cart and pay. Clicking "Pay now" submits a binding offer to the operator, which the platform accepts in the operator's name once you receive a booking confirmation and a voucher. On selected activities you can use "Reserve now, pay later": the card is charged €0 at booking and the full amount 72 hours before the start; if the charge fails you have 47 hours to pay manually, or the booking is canceled automatically.
Posted prices are usually inclusive of taxes and fees, and where extra local charges apply the listing has to disclose them. Two details worth knowing: the platform will pay the difference if you find the same activity, same conditions, same supplier, cheaper elsewhere online — its best-price matching clause — and the order in which listings appear is driven by "popularity, diversity, availability, cancellation rate, rating, performance over time, and amount of revenue generated". The last item on that list is a commercial one, so the top result is not simply the best boat.
Cancellation, weather and the clause that matters
Whale watching is weather-dependent in a way city tours are not, so read the cancellation line rather than the marketing. GetYourGuide's about page advertises "free cancellation up to 24 hours in advance", and the default in its terms matches: more than 24 hours before the start, full refund; 24 hours or less, or a no-show, nothing. But that default applies only where the listing and the operator's own terms are silent, and whale operators frequently are not silent — Prince of Whales is non-refundable inside 48 hours, Vancouver Whale Watch and SpringTide both work to 48 hours, Orca Spirit to 24. Where a listing's terms and the platform's conflict, the terms say "the provision that is more beneficial to you shall govern".
The clause that earns the booking fee is the other one. If the operator cancels for weather, official measures, strikes or comparable force majeure, the booking price is refunded. On a coast where a small-craft warning cancels a zodiac sailing at short notice, that is worth having in writing.
A sighting guarantee is never the platform's. Every re-ride clause on this site — the lifetime pass in Steveston, the standby fare waiver in Victoria, the Whale Warranty in Tadoussac — belongs to the operator, and you claim it from the operator.

What its whale catalog actually holds
Our feed carries 263 whale- and dolphin-watching products across 32 location groups, from Monterey to Mirissa. The median price is $92. Fifty-four sit under $50 — mostly Atlantic-island and Mediterranean dolphin cruises in Tenerife, Madeira and southern Spain — and 55 above $150, which is where the Canadian and Alaskan trips live. Two hundred and sixty-one carry a rating, 127 of them 4.7 or better, on roughly 280,000 reviews in total.
The catalog is deepest exactly where mass-market whale watching is: Iceland, Tenerife, Madeira, the Azores, Queensland and New South Wales. It is thinnest where the best whale watching often is — Baja's gray-whale lagoons, Ningaloo, Hermanus shore-watching — and where it is thin we say so on the place page rather than pushing a substitute.
Not every product in a "whale and dolphin" search is a wild-animal trip, and the Dominican Republic group is where that shows. Four of its listings are captive-facility tickets — Ocean World in Puerto Plata and the Punta Cana dolphin swims — sold under the same category as boat trips. A fifth, a one-hour "private whale watching cruise" from Punta Cana priced at $6, does not describe anything that can be run for the money. We do not present any of those as whale watching, and neither should a search result: check that the listing puts you on a boat looking for wild animals before you compare it on price.

When to book here, and when to book direct
Book here when you are comparing boats in a port you do not know, when you want one checkout in your own currency, or when you want a written cancellation window you can read before paying. Book direct when the operator's own site is materially cheaper, which it can be: in Tadoussac Croisières AML publishes fares roughly a quarter below the platform's, while in Victoria Prince of Whales lands within a few dollars of it once tax is in. Book direct too if you need to talk to the boat about a wheelchair, a pregnancy or a child's height limit — the platform is not the operator and cannot answer for it.
For the wider picture, see our operators hub, and the two platforms we do not partner with: Viator and Headout and Tiqets.
Our call
Use it to compare and to book in an unfamiliar port
One checkout, your own currency, a written cancellation window on every listing, and a refund in the operator's own terms if weather kills the sailing.
Skip it if Use it as a price oracle. In Québec the direct fare is roughly a quarter lower; always open the operator's own site before paying.
Browse whale toursQuestions people ask
Who am I buying from when I book a whale tour on GetYourGuide?
The boat operator. GetYourGuide's terms say the contract "is concluded exclusively and directly between you and the Supplier" and that the platform acts as a commercial agent, taking a commission from the operator for brokering it.
What is GetYourGuide's cancellation policy for whale tours?
There is no single answer. The platform's default is a full refund more than 24 hours before the start and nothing inside 24 hours, but that applies only where the listing and the supplier's own terms are silent. Whale tours often carry stricter or longer windows, so read the cancellation line on the listing.
What happens if the boat cancels because of weather?
The terms allow a supplier to cancel without notice for weather, official measures, strikes or other force majeure, and state that the booking price will be refunded. That is the clause that matters most on a whale trip.
Is GetYourGuide cheaper than booking direct?
Sometimes level, sometimes not. In Victoria the platform price and the operator's published fare land within a few dollars of each other once tax is in; in Tadoussac the platform sits well above the operator's own rate. Check both.
Can I tell which company actually runs the boat?
On the listing, yes — GetYourGuide shows an activity provider line and maintains per-supplier pages. We cannot read those pages from our side, because getyourguide.com returns an error to automated requests, so we never state a provider we could not confirm.
Are the reviews real?
The terms forbid user content that is untrue or misleading, paid for by a third party, or "created by or at the direction of the Supplier who provides the Activity". Ratings are still self-selecting, and a boat with 2,000 reviews tells you more than one with 12.
Does this site make money from GetYourGuide?
Yes. GetYourGuide is our only booking partner, and our links carry a partner tag, so a booking made through them earns us a commission at no extra cost to you. It does not change the price you pay and it does not decide what we write.
