SpringTide is the small one on Wharf Street, and it plays that hand well: one covered boat, two open zodiacs, a family that has been on this water since the early 1990s, and a photo package thrown in on the cruiser so nobody spends three hours behind a phone. Adult fares are C$169 on the Ocean Cruiser and C$189 on the zodiac, before taxes and fees. If you want an indoor seat and a washroom without paying Victoria's top rate, this is the booking.
First, the address. The brand is still widely listed as springtidewhalewatching.com, but that domain no longer serves a working site — the live operation is victoriawhalewatching.com, and that is where the fares, schedules and terms below come from.
What the company actually is
SpringTide Whale Watching & Eco Tours is family-owned, led by Dan and Joanne Kukat, and named after the couple's own 36-foot boat. Its own pages describe it as family-owned and local for over 33 years; the Pacific Whale Watch Association's member profile dates SpringTide Charters to 1986, says Victoria operations began in 1994 as a sport-fishing company under Dan Kukat, credits it with authoring the region's first wildlife viewing guidelines, and puts current fleet capacity at 152 passengers. The company moved from sport fishing into whale watching in the early 1990s.
The check-in office is at 1119 Wharf Street, open 08:30 to 19:00 daily. Everything leaves from there, which makes this the simplest of the three Victoria operators to find.

Boats and season
Marauder IV is the Ocean Cruiser — 61 feet, a heated cabin, an onboard washroom, indoor and outdoor decks, complimentary coffee, tea and hot chocolate, and all-weather jackets and pants supplied. It was a charter yacht out of Vancouver's Bayshore before SpringTide took it on. GetYourGuide's supplier page for the company calls it exactly that, an Ocean Cruiser, so do not expect a motoryacht experience despite the pedigree.
The zodiacs take 12 passengers, run open with full-body flotation suits supplied and have no washroom.
Seasons as published: the Ocean Cruiser sails from late March to 31 October at 10:00 and 14:00; the zodiac from 1 April to 31 October, with a midday departure carried through fall and winter; sunset tours on both boats in June, July and August. Tours run about three hours. The company's own line on timing is worth quoting: "Our peak season runs from June to October, but whales can be spotted in these waters all year long. There's no 'best' time of the day."
What it costs and what the guarantee covers
The Ocean Cruiser Whale & Wildlife Tour is published at C$179 discounted to C$169 per adult; the Zodiac Adventure is C$189. Both are before taxes and fees. Two extras are genuinely unusual: a complimentary photo package on every Ocean Cruiser tour, and a price match the company calls Victoria's Best Ticket Price Guarantee on comparable tours.
SpringTide has its own GetYourGuide supplier page at s751, which lists the Ocean Cruiser and the zodiac tours and carries the platform's "Supplier:" label. We could only read it on an archived copy, because GetYourGuide's live pages return an error to automated requests — so treat the platform's Victoria zodiac listing as a Victoria price rather than a confirmed SpringTide listing. Prices are checked regularly.
Sighting guarantee
Your base fare is waived on a standby re-ride. Taxes and fees are not.
- Wording
- "If we don't encounter whales on your tour, you are welcome to join us again on a standby basis – your base fare is on us (taxes and fees still apply). Our whale guarantee never expires."
- Window
- No expiry date is published
- Condition
- Standby basis — you are fitted onto a departure with space, not given a reserved seat
- Claimed success rate
- The company publishes a sightings success rate of over 95%
This is a fare waiver on a second trip, not a refund. No operator can promise a sighting.
Read that clause carefully. "Standby basis" means you join a departure that has room rather than booking a seat, and "taxes and fees still apply" means the free trip is not free at the till. It is still one of the more generous wordings on this coast, because it never expires.
The practical detail
Check in no later than 30 minutes before departure. Cancellation is free with at least 48 hours' notice; inside 48 hours the booking is non-refundable — a longer window than Orca Spirit's 24 hours, and worth something if your ferry is unreliable.
Zodiac restrictions are published and firm: no children under seven or under 4 ft 6 in (135 cm), no expectant mothers, and nobody with back or neck injuries or recent surgery. Pregnant guests are welcome on the Ocean Cruiser.
Parking is the usual Wharf Street problem. The company points at WestPark Lot 708 at 1112 Wharf Street, three minutes away, and the Yates Street Parkade at 575 Yates Street, five minutes; street parking is capped at 90 minutes, and it advises allowing at least four and a half hours of parking for a three-hour trip.

How it compares with the neighbors
Orca Spirit undercuts SpringTide by C$10 on its semi-covered boat and adds a naturalist and hydrophone to every departure, but charges a C$4 conservation fee and a C$10.70 fuel surcharge on top and cancels at 24 hours. Prince of Whales is the big fleet — fifteen boats, three ports — at C$189 for the Victoria half-day, and it can move you to Vancouver or Telegraph Cove if Victoria does not suit.
A fourth name you will meet locally is gone: Five Star Whale Watching, long the city's oldest company, has stopped running tours and referred its customers to Orca Spirit. Eagle Wing Tours, from Dallas Road, remains.
All of them are Pacific Whale Watch Association members working the same regulated water, where vessels must stay 1,000 m from Southern Resident killer whales under a federal Interim Order. For how the port fits together, see Victoria and Canada; for how booking through a platform differs from booking direct, see our GetYourGuide review.
