Stagnaro is the whale-watching operation at the north end of Monterey Bay, trading as Santa Cruz Whale Watching and run by the same family that has worked this harbor for generations. It sells the longest standard whale trip on the bay — three to four hours for $73 — and it sells it only on its own site. If you are staying in Santa Cruz, it saves you the drive to Monterey. If you want free cancellation or a guaranteed re-ride, it offers neither.
What it actually is
The company's history page traces the family to 1879, when "Italian Patriarch Cottardo Stagnaro settled in Santa Cruz", and says the Stagnaros have served Santa Cruz and Monterey Bay for over a century. That makes it the oldest continuously family-linked name on this water, older than any of the Southern California operators.
Two brands sit on the same boats. Stagnaro Sport Fishing runs the fishing side from stagnaros.com; Santa Cruz Whale Watching runs the wildlife trips. The skipper is usually Ken Stagnaro, a Santa Cruz native who, according to the company, ran a US Coast Guard search-and-rescue vessel in the San Francisco Bay area in the early 1980s before coming home to the family boats, and has been running whale and sea-life excursions for over 20 years. He also narrates.
The boats, the harbor and the season
The Velocity is the main vessel: 60 feet, built by Yank Marine in Tuckahoe, New Jersey and completed in California in 2005, certified by the Coast Guard for 66 passengers, with a galley selling snacks and drinks. The Legacy, a 56-foot fiberglass Westport, joined it at Dock F with a galley, snack bar with beer and wine, and a restroom. Both are licensed beer and wine vessels, so outside alcohol is not allowed, and coolers longer than 20 inches are refused.

The boarding point trips people up. It is Dock F in the Santa Cruz Small Craft Harbor, a mile east of the Municipal Wharf; the company gives 789 Mariner Park Way for satellite navigation and asks for arrival 30 minutes before departure, with harbor parking pre-paid at blue kiosks by the hour. It also warns that traffic around the harbor is heavy at weekends and in the afternoon and that latecomers are not waited for — currently complicated further by a bridge closure near the harbor. Leave more time than the map suggests.
On seasons the company is specific. Humpbacks are "the most common whale found out of Santa Cruz", usually April through November, feeding on anchovy, sardine and krill. From December through April roughly 20,000 gray whales pass the coast, with peak migration mid-January to mid-March. Blue whales are more likely in summer and autumn, and the chance of killer whales rises in March, April and May. It claims seven whale species and seven dolphin and porpoise species over a year.
What it costs, and what it does not promise
The whale, dolphin and sea life excursion is $73 adult, $55 child aged 4–13 and $2 for infants under three, all including a $2 per-passenger port district fee. Groups of ten or more pay an 8% gratuity at check-in. The same boats run a 2-hour Shark & Wildlife trip in late spring and summer at $55 and $39, and a 1-hour inner-bay Sanctuary Scenic Cruise in summer at $29 and $19.
Sighting guarantee
There is no sighting guarantee. Stagnaro publishes none, and says plainly that shark sightings 'cannot be guaranteed'.
- Whales
- No guarantee, no re-ride clause and no refund policy published for a blank trip
- Sharks
- On the 2-hour Shark & Wildlife trip: 'Shark sightings are subject to environmental conditions… Shark sightings cannot be guaranteed'
- Weather
- 'All trips are weather and sea permitting' — the captain's call
- What it does promise
- A fully narrated trip with a marine naturalist aboard, and a boat that can run from Monterey to Moss Landing and north
An operator with no guarantee is not automatically worse than one with a free-re-ride clause. It is simply selling you the trip, not the whale. Ask what happens on a blank day before you pay.
Per hour on the water, that $73 is the cheapest published direct fare on this bay — Princess Monterey asks $79.50 for 2.5 to 3 hours and Sea Goddess $69.95 plus tax for 2 to 3. It is also the only one with no safety net at all, and no partner listing to fall back on.
Booking, and why there is no online price here
GetYourGuide sells nothing from Santa Cruz. Every bookable trip in this feed leaves from the Monterey side, which means your options are to phone or book direct with Stagnaro, or to drive 45 minutes south and take a listed trip from Monterey or Moss Landing.

Prices are checked regularly, and these are the Monterey-side alternatives, not Stagnaro's. Two of them are shorter than Stagnaro's trip; the $75 flagship is comparable in length and costs $2 more, with the difference that you can cancel it.
How it compares with the neighbors
Blue Ocean at Moss Landing is 30 minutes down the coast, sails a single 60-foot boat capped at 28 passengers and publishes the strongest guarantee on the bay — a free next trip if no whale is seen. Sea Goddess, from the same Moss Landing dock, runs larger boats with a free-return promise that a dolphin sighting also satisfies. Princess Monterey has the biggest and steadiest vessels on the far rim at Monterey.
Stagnaro's answer to all of them is length and location: four hours from the harbor you are already parked at, on a boat that can run south to Moss Landing and north along the shelf without burning half the trip on transit. For the rest of the state, the California page lines up all eight harbors.
Our call
The 3–4 hour whale, dolphin and sea life excursion, May to November
It is the longest standard trip on Monterey Bay at $73, it carries a naturalist, and from the north rim it can work the humpback grounds off Santa Cruz without first crossing the bay. Between April and November humpbacks are the most common whale here, not a hoped-for extra.
Skip it if If you need free cancellation or a guaranteed re-ride — neither exists here, and nothing Stagnaro runs is sold through a booking platform.

How much is a Stagnaro whale watching trip?
Its rates page lists $73 for adults, $55 for children aged 4 to 13 and $2 for infants under 3 on the 3–4 hour whale, dolphin and sea life excursion. All fares include a $2 per passenger port district fee, and groups of ten or more pay an 8% gratuity collected at check-in.
Where do Stagnaro whale watching boats leave from?
Dock F in the Santa Cruz Small Craft Harbor, not the Municipal Wharf. The company gives 789 Mariner Park Way, Santa Cruz for satellite navigation, asks passengers to arrive 30 minutes before departure, and runs its gift shop and office at 1718 Brommer Street.
Which whales will I see from Santa Cruz?
Stagnaro says humpbacks are the most common whale out of Santa Cruz, usually April through November, and that over 20,000 gray whales pass the coast from December through April. Blue whales are more likely in summer and autumn, and the chance of killer whales rises in March, April and May.
What boats does Stagnaro use?

No. The GetYourGuide feed has no Santa Cruz whale-watching departures at all. Book direct with Stagnaro, or take a bookable trip from the Monterey side of the same bay.
