Terra Azul is what a small whale-watching company looks like when it does one thing. Two rigid inflatables, one harbor, one lookout on the hill, a marine biologist on every departure and no attempt to also sell you a jeep tour. It has operated out of the marina at Vila Franca do Campo, about 25 minutes east of Ponta Delgada, since March 2000 by its own account.
The company behind the brand is Terrazul, Animação Turística Lda, registered with the Portuguese tourism authority as RNAAT 131/2015 and holding maritime-tourism licence MT 39/2009. Those numbers are on its own footer, which is more than many Azorean operators publish.
The lookout is the point
Azorean whale watching was built on land. Whalers stood on cliff-top posts called vigias and radioed boats onto the animals, and the good operators here still work that way rather than driving around hoping.
Terra Azul's post is the Vigia da Furada above Ponta Garça, used for whaling until 1984 and rebuilt by the company in 2003 with radio to its skippers. It describes the lookout as a local landmark that visitors, students and residents can walk up to and try the binoculars. That is a genuine difference from an operator that sails out blind, and it is the same method Espaço Talassa uses on Pico.

The boats, and who they are not for
There are two: a 12-passenger RIB and a 28-passenger RIB. No catamaran, no indoor seating, no toilet on board. The company argues that this keeps groups small and disturbance low, and that is fair, but it also means the trip is physical.
Terra Azul's own restriction list is unusually blunt for a booking page: not for pregnant passengers, anyone with a weak back, wheelchair users, anyone in delicate health, or children under four. Life vests are worn for the whole trip and you stay seated until the skipper says otherwise. If any of that rules you out, Futurismo in Ponta Delgada is the operator with catamarans.
The trip itself runs about three hours: briefing, high-speed run to wherever the lookout has called, then a slow approach, with a 15-minute loop around the Vila Franca islet on the way back. Departures are 08:30, 12:30 and — from April to October — 15:40.
What it costs
Terra Azul prices by season rather than by boat. Its site lists €78 per adult and €54 per child from 1 April to 30 September, and €65 and €45 from 1 October to 31 March. Prices are checked regularly. A 20% deposit confirms a booking, the balance is due 24 hours before departure, and cancellations more than seven days out are refunded in full.
That is at the upper end for the Azores. You are paying for a small boat and a two-figure passenger count rather than a share of a hundred-seat deck.
Sighting guarantee
Terra Azul is the rare operator that puts a number on the money: a free second tour, or 80% back if you cannot return.
- What is promised
- 'If you book a TERRA AZUL Whale Watching or Swim with Dolphins tour, and no Cetacean (either a Whale or a Dolphin) is sighted, we welcome you back for a second tour free of charge within 30 days' (azoreswhalewatch.com)
- If you cannot come back
- 'This is not a money-back guarantee – if you are unavailable to reschedule, we will need to retain 20% to cover fuel costs, and 80% will be refunded'
- Who it covers
- Direct bookings on its own website only. It does not apply to large groups or private tours
- Weather
- If conditions stop the boat sailing safely and you cannot reschedule, the company says you are fully refunded
A cetacean means a dolphin as readily as a whale. Read the clause on the page you book from.
The 80% line is the useful part. Almost every whale-watching guarantee in Europe is a free re-ride and nothing else, which is worthless if you fly home the next morning. Terra Azul is one of the few that says in writing what happens to your money when you cannot come back — and equally clearly that the clause only applies if you booked direct.

One listing in that group is this operator's own. The archived listing page for the three-hour "Azores Whale Watching & Islet Boat Tour w/ Marine Biologist" names the activity provider as Azores Whale Watching Terra Azul, and the islet loop in the title is the Vila Franca circuit described above:
The catch is the guarantee. Terra Azul limits its free-second-tour and 80% clause to bookings made on its own website, so a platform seat gets you the boat without the remedy. Several other São Miguel listings in the same group depart from Ponta Delgada rather than Vila Franca do Campo — the archived provider lines name Futurismo and Picos de Aventura on two of them — so read the harbor and the provider before booking on the assumption you are getting this operator.
One product in the group is a swim-with-wild-dolphins trip. Terra Azul does sell dolphin swims. Futurismo has stopped promoting them and Espaço Talassa ended its program in 2017, both on welfare grounds — a disagreement worth knowing about before you book one.
How it compares
Against Futurismo, Terra Azul is smaller, slightly dearer per head, has no catamaran option and a better-written guarantee. Against Espaço Talassa on Pico it is dearer again — €49 there — but you do not need a second flight to reach it.
What it shares with both is the method: lookouts on land, biologists on board, and honesty that the animals decide. The most-wanted sighting in these waters is covered on our sperm whale page.

Our call
Our call
The 08:30 departure in a shoulder month
The first boat of the day gets the flattest sea and the lookout has the whole morning to work with, and outside peak season you pay €65 instead of €78 for the same three hours. Terra Azul's guarantee is also the only one on São Miguel that tells you exactly what you get back.
Skip it if Any of it if you need a toilet, a seat with a back, or a boat a child under four can board.
Check datesQuestions people ask
Where does Terra Azul depart from?
The marina at Vila Franca do Campo on São Miguel's south coast, roughly 25 minutes by road east of Ponta Delgada. That is a different harbor from the city operators, so allow for the drive and parking before check-in.
How much does a Terra Azul tour cost?
Its own site lists €78 per adult and €54 per child from 1 April to 30 September, dropping to €65 and €45 from 1 October to 31 March. A 15-minute loop around the Vila Franca islet is included in the trip. Prices are checked regularly.
What boats does it use?
Two rigid inflatables — one for 12 passengers, one for 28. There is no catamaran and no covered cabin, which is the trade for speed and for sitting close to the water.
Who cannot go on the boat?
Terra Azul refuses boarding to pregnant passengers, anyone with a weak back, wheelchair users, anyone in delicate health and children under four. Children up to 13 must be with an adult.
What are the departure times?
08:30, 12:30 and an extra 15:40 departure from April to October. The trip runs about three hours including the briefing and the islet loop.
Does the guarantee cover bookings made through a platform?
No. The company states the sighting guarantee is exclusive to tours booked directly through its own website, and that it does not apply to large groups or private charters.
Are sperm whales really resident here?
Terra Azul says they are. The Azores tourism board is more careful, grouping sperm whales with species that are frequent in summer and naming only common and bottlenose dolphins as resident. Treat year-round sperm whales as likely rather than certain.
